The following works of Fiction have been selected by the staff because they are interesting, enjoyable and generally good choices for reading material.

The Assassin

Know best for his ever popular Dirk Pitt adventures, Clive Cussler's "The Assassin" takes us to the early 1900’s and the life of Van Dorn private detective Isaac Bell. In this book Bell strives to land a contract with John D. Rockefeller of Standard Oil when suddenly the case turns deadly after a shooting and explosion. Can Bell and his team of detectives find the assassin before all comes to an explosive end? Though this is a series it can be read as a standalone adventure or you can go back to the first book.



Saint Odd

The last installment of the Odd Thomas stories. Odd is a self-proclaim short order cook from the small town of Pico Mundo who sees dead people and more often than not that carries him into a situation that he has to correct. Once more it is up to Odd to save the day in the place where it all started. He must face the very people that took his one true love from him but they want revenge cause Odd has interfered with their plans far too many times and their target in Pico Mundo. Well worth going back to book 1, Odd Thomas, and reading the series.

A Lesson Before Dying

A Lesson before dying, is set in a small Cajun community in the late 1940s. Jefferson, a young black man, is an unwitting party to a liquor store shoot out in which three men are killed; the only survivor, he is convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Grant Wiggins, who left his hometown for the university, has returned to the plantation school to teach. As he struggles with his decision whether to stay or escape to another state, his aunt and Jefferson's godmother persuade him to visit Jefferson in his cell and impart his learning and his pride to Jefferson before his death. In the end, the two men forge a bond as they both come to understand the simple heroism of resisting--and defying--the expected.



Big Stone Gap

The Invention of Wings

The story follows Hetty "Handful" Grimke, a Charleston slave, and Sarah, the daughter of the wealthy Grimke family. The novel begins on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership over Handful, who is to be her handmaid. "The Invention of Wings" follows the next thirty-five years of their lives. Inspired in part by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke (a feminist, suffragist and, importantly, an abolitionist), Kidd allows herself to go beyond the record to flesh out the inner lives of all the characters, both real and imagined
