Alaska and Jupiter: On this day October 18th

In 1867: Following U.S. Senate ratification of the treaty of cession, the largest state in the union, Alaska was formally transferred from Russia to the United States.

While in 1989: The spacecraft Galileo was launched from a Space Shuttle on its mission, a first, to orbit the planet Jupiter and send a probe into its atmosphere; it accomplished these goals in 1995 and continued to return data until 2003. If you would like to find out more about the largest planet in our solar system, astronomy, or the solar system, head over to the library catalog.
