After beginning to type the story of an Atlanta belle named Pansy O’Hara, Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind was published on this day in 1936. Pansy, of course, had undergone a name change to the now famous Scarlett at the suggestion of her editor. The novel is still considered one of the most best-selling books of all time, and it also became the basis for the 1939 movie of the same title.
